A simple, inexpensive method for detecting contaminants in heparin has been devised by Michigan University researchers.

Heparin, a blood-thinning drug, although very effective against clots in veins, arteries and lungs, was under a cloud when contaminated samples caused serious allergic reactions resulting in many deaths.

The method relies on potentiometric polyanion sensors originally developed in Michigan University (MU) researcher Mark Meyerhoff’s lab as a tool for detecting heparin in blood.

In the latest work, Meyerhoff and coworkers show that the disposable sensors also can be used to distinguish pure heparin from heparin that is tainted with small quantities of oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OSCS), the culprit in the recent deaths, said an MU release.

“In this technique, the magnitude of the voltage you get from the sensing membrane is dependent on polyion charge density,” Meyerhoff said, “and because the contaminant has a higher charge density than heparin, the method allows us to detect the contaminant in the presence of excess heparin.”

The new method is simpler and less expensive than analytical methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and capillary electrophoresis (CE), which have been suggested for detection of OSCS contaminants.

Meyerhoff, professor of chemistry, envisions the procedure being used on site in drug manufacturing plants to screen raw materials or finalized, biomedical grade heparin products for contaminants.

The new method was described in Analytical Chemistry.

Pedroia easily beat out Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau and added to his ever-expanding trophy case. The Red Sox star was the top AL rookie last year while winning a World Series ring.

Nellie Fox was the last second baseman to become AL MVP, in 1959 with the White Sox.

Pedroia drew 16 of the 28 first-place votes cast by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and finished with 317 points.

It was a scattered ballot, with five players receiving first-place votes. Pedroia was even left off one ballot — Morneau and Boston first baseman Kevin Youkilis were listed on every one.

Morneau got seven first-place votes and had 257 points. Youkilis and Twins catcher Joe Mauer each got a pair of first-place votes. Record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez of the Angels drew the other first-place nod and came in sixth.

Pedroia led the AL in hits, runs and doubles in helping the Red Sox win the AL wild-card berth. He batted .326 with 17 home runs and 83 RBIs and also stole 20 bases.

Pedroia quickly became a fan favorite at Fenway Park with his meaty swings and gritty approach. This year, in a lineup depleted with injuries to David Ortiz and Mike Lowell and the midseason trade of Manny Ramirez, Pedroia took his hearty hacks at the plate wherever needed — while he usually batted second, he also hit leadoff and cleanup.

The Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX) Tuesday announced it will be known as Nasdaq Dubai from Nov 20, after Nasdaq OMX, which runs the Nasdaq stock exchange in New York, decided to list its shares in the Dubai bourse.

The Nasdaq OMX decision comes after it bought a one-third stake in DIFX in February. The remaining stock is owned by Bourse Dubai.

The world’s largest exchange company, US-headquartered Nasdaq OMX owns and operates seven European stock exchanges in the Nordic and Baltic regions, apart from the New York bourse.

‘As the international stock exchange serving this region, Nasdaq Dubai acts as a capital markets gateway for investors all over the world, including and especially in this region,’ Soud Ba’alawy, chairman of Nasdaq Dubai and a director at Nasdaq OMX, said while announcing DIFX’s new name.

‘Nasdaq Dubai’s growing ties to Nasdaq OMX exchanges in the US and Europe in listings, marketing, technology, and management expertise will support its continuing expansion,’ he added.

According to Bob Greifield, chairman of Nasdaq OMX and vice-chairman of Nasdaq Dubai, Western investors are showing interest in the Gulf and the Middle East.

‘Nasdaq Dubai provides a first-class venue through which Nasdaq OMX-listed companies can reach new investors in the Gulf and the Middle East,’ he said.

Coinciding with the launch of the new Nasdaq Dubai brand, Nasdaq OMX is organising the First Middle East Investor Conference here Nov 20, and the same day, the opening bell ceremony of Nasdaq New York will be held in this West Asian metropolis.

‘We’ve attracted 29 companies to our first Middle East investor conference here in Dubai and there is clear and tangible interest in this market,’ Greifield said.

‘To facilitate dual listings on Nasdaq Dubai, we have created a streamlined listing process for companies looking to have a secondary listing here,’ he added.

Nasdaq Dubai will also launch a UAE derivatives market Nov 20 in which members will be able to trade single stock futures on UAE-listed equities and a future on the FTSE DIFX UAE 20 equity index calculated by FTSE International.

Under the new name, Nasdaq Dubai will also extend its trading hours.

‘Nasdaq Dubai is taking active steps to further develop its market including extending its opening hours, opening on Sundays, and allowing listings in UAE dirhams,’ Nasdaq Dubai chief executive Jeff Singer said.

Established as DIFX in September 2005, Nasdaq Dubai is situated in the Dubai International Financial Centre, onshore financial hub here designed to bridge the time gap between western Europe and East Asia.

In a posting on its new website, Nasdaq Dubai said its region will include the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the wider Middle East and North Africa, Turkey and the Indian subcontinent.

‘Through the exchange, regional and international issuers can access regional and international investment. International issuers can access investment from the region, through a primary or dual listing,’ the website posting read.

The new Dubai bourse rebranding is significant given the emerging importance of the Gulf in the face of the global financial crisis.

With strong liquidity boosted by surging oil revenues, Gulf countries are collectively emerging as key player in the world economic order.

Trucks are becoming more and more prevalent on our nation’s highways. This means that there are going to be more accidents involving trucks and more serious injuries to deal with. If you are hurt, then you need to be ready to fight for your rightful compensation to pay for your recovery. Hire a Dallas truck accident attorney to make sure that you have the experts on your side.

The actual processes won’t be that hard. Once you hire your lawyer, they will take care of the paperwork that needs to be done. The insurance companies will want you to sign away a lot of your rights to limit their expense, which means that you will really need someone to act as a filter. Like your attorney check any document and have him issue counter demands on the company.

If you reach an impasse, then you will just have to go to court and file your case. Your lawyer will handle all the details in this case. Just follow their lead and let them do the heavy lifting. If you have a good Dallas county truck accident attorney on your side, then you will be fine. Just don’t let them push you around.

When small companies cannot have their own web servers and hosting facilities, they will have to face serious challenges in the market. They will be struggling to make a presence online so that, their business could grow more.

Without the investment for your own servers and bandwidth, you can share these with those of other providers, through a strategy called colocation.

The presence of various large scale providers with this facility has increased the chances of growth for small scale sectors. The growth of such providers has very well replaced the need for dedicated server hosting.

When this is compared with other solutions, the profit and benefit obtained are high. Utah colocation providers come up with various strategies required for the growth of your business. The reliability of this server environment multiplies the benefits.

When you use the service delivered by these providers, you will not have to be worried about the maintenance issues related to a network. The fully managed and built set up in which the providers function enable you to enjoy the same level of hosting environment that a large company owns.

Without the thorough knowledge of this functioning and management, you will thus have a server hosted for your business.

Coming on the heels of two studies discounting the usefulness of vitamin B, folic acid, vitamin D and calcium supplements for cancer prevention, U.S. researchers report that vitamins C and E supplements won’t help prevent cancer, either.

The same team also recently reported that vitamin C and E supplements weren’t helpful in protecting users against heart disease.

“At least in the context of two very common outcomes — cardioprotection and chemoprevention — we see no compelling evidence to take vitamin E or C supplements,” said one of the study’s authors, Dr. Howard Sesso, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Sesso is expected to present the findings Sunday at an American Academy of Cancer Research (AACR) meeting in Washington, D.C.

The study included almost 15,000 male physicians who were randomly assigned to take a 500 milligram vitamin C supplement daily and 400 international units of vitamin E every other day, or placebo pills for the 10 years of the study. All of the men were over the age of 50 at the start of the trial.

The participants experienced a total of 1,929 cases of cancer, including 1,013 prostate cancers. Overall, 490 men taking vitamin E developed prostate cancer compared to 523 in the placebo group, a difference that Sesso said was not statistically significant. Similar results were seen for vitamin C. The overall risk of cancer generally was also not statistically significant between the two groups.

“This is a very large, long-term clinical trial, and it was determined there was no effect from E or C,” Sesso concluded.

Another expert wasn’t surprised by the findings.

“This is preliminary data, but it is pretty consistent with what we’re seeing in other research with individual nutrients. When you take the nutrient out of its natural environment, it may not be protective,” said Jennifer Crum, a nutritionist at the New York University Cancer Institute, who added that in foods, vitamins and other nutrients likely work together to provide protection against cancer.

“People are starting to realize the importance of the overall picture,” said Crum, who recommended that people begin by making small changes, such as exercising a little bit longer or adding another vegetable a day to your diet. “When people make small changes for their health — exercising for 20 to 30 minutes a day, eating better — we see lower rates of cancer recurrence,” she said.

Sesso also recommended focusing on a healthy diet, rather than individual components. “There are things we know about cancer prevention,” he said. Sesso advised people to “eat a well-balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, don’t smoke, and exercise regularly.”

In other studies being presented at the AACR meeting, researchers looking at calcium supplementation’s effect on colorectal cancer did have some good news. In people who took calcium supplements, but maintained a low calcium-to-magnesium intake ratio, the risk of colorectal cancer was reduced. The study was done by scientists at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tenn., and Dartmouth Medical School in New Lebanon, N.H.

A third study found that taking aspirin could affect blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is used to gauge men’s risk for prostate cancer. The research, also from Vanderbilt, suggests that aspirin might, therefore, decrease physicians’ ability to detect prostate cancer in men.

The finding echoes another study, published recently in the journal Cancer. However, what isn’t clear is if these lower levels indicate a reduced risk of prostate cancer or just a reduced ability to detect the disease based on PSA. Experts advise letting your doctor know if you’ve taken any pain-relieving medications such as aspirin before having a PSA test.

Facing the gravest economic crisis in decades, world leaders have agreed to initiate “strong and significant actions” to stimulate economies, bring transparency in financial system, offer liquidity and reform financial institutions to beat the looming recession. At a G-20 summit convened by US President George W Bush here yesterday, the leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, warned that “economic momentum is slowing substantially in major economies and the global outlook has weakened”.

The meeting witnessed a shift in balance of power in which key emerging economies like India and China demanded a greater say. “We need to ensure that any new architecture we design is genuinely multilateral with adequate representation from countries reflecting changes in economic realities,” Singh said addressing the summit.

Singh asked world leaders to refrain from protectionism and pave way for multilateral regulatory supervision to avert the recurrence of crisis that has led to the world economy to the recession. Virtually responding to Singh’s demand against protectionism, Bush said, “We are committed to the people in the developing world.

We have deep desire to reduce trade deficit.” “.

That attitude (protectionism) was rejected, thankfully. And as a matter of fact, not only rejected, there is a determined effort to see if we can’t complete the modalities for Doha by the end of December,” Bush said.

Researchers from Louisiana State University, New Orleans claim to have identified a key contributor in the development of Alzheimer’’s disease.

They revealed that a fragment of ribonucleic acid (RNA), once thought to be no more than a by-product, plays a crucial role in regulating inflammation and the development of Alzheimer’’s disease.

The tiny piece of RNA, or microRNA, called miRNA-146a was found in increased amounts in stressed human brain cells and Alzheimer’’s disease

Lead researcher Walter J. Lukiw, PhD, Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Ophthalmology at LSU Health Sciences Centre showed that MiRNA-146a targets the messenger RNA of an important anti-inflammatory regulator called complement factor H (CFH).

Testing both control cells and Alzheimer’’s disease-affected tissues, they found that miRNA-164a appears to reduce the amount and bioavailability of CFH, promoting the inflammation of brain cells and contributing to the development of Alzheimer’’s disease.

“The goal of these neuroscience research studies is to further our understanding of the molecular biology and genetic mechanisms associated with Alzheimer’’s Disease and to advance the design of therapeutic strategies to counteract this common and tragic neurological disorder,” said Dr. Lukiw.

The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer’’s Disease is a fatal, age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by the progressive erosion of cognition and memory.

The study appears in The Journal of Biological Chemistry.

An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said.

While researchers — and the doctors themselves — caution that the case might be no more than a fluke, others say it may inspire a greater interest in gene therapy to fight the disease that claims 2 million lives each year. The virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.

Dr. Gero Huetter said Wedneday his 42-year-old patient, an American living in Berlin who was not identified, had been infected with the AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer shows signs of carrying the virus.

“We waited every day for a bad reading,” Huetter said.

It has not come. Researchers at Berlin’s Charite hospital and medical school say tests on his bone marrow, blood and other organ tissues have all been clean.

However, Dr. Andrew Badley, director of the HIV and immunology research lab at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said those tests have probably not been extensive enough.

“A lot more scrutiny from a lot of different biological samples would be required to say it’s not present,” Badley said.

This isn’t the first time marrow transplants have been attempted for treating AIDS or HIV infection. In 1999, an article in the journal Medical Hypotheses reviewed the results of 32 attempts reported between 1982 and 1996. In two cases, HIV was apparently eradicated, the review reported.

Huetter’s patient was under treatment at Charite for both AIDS and leukemia, which developed unrelated to HIV.

As Huetter — who is a hematologist, not an HIV specialist — prepared to treat the patient’s leukemia with a bone marrow transplant, he recalled that some people carry a genetic mutation that seems to make them resistant to HIV infection. If the mutation, called Delta 32, is inherited from both parents, it prevents HIV from attaching itself to cells by blocking CCR5, a receptor that acts as a kind of gateway.

“I read it in 1996, coincidentally,” Huetter told reporters at the medical school. “I remembered it and thought it might work.”

Roughly one in 1,000 Europeans and Americans have inherited the mutation from both parents, and Huetter set out to find one such person among donors that matched the patient’s marrow type. Out of a pool of 80 suitable donors, the 61st person tested carried the proper mutation.

Before the transplant, the patient endured powerful drugs and radiation to kill off his own infected bone marrow cells and disable his immune system — a treatment fatal to between 20 and 30 percent of recipients.

He was also taken off the potent drugs used to treat his AIDS. Huetter’s team feared that the drugs might interfere with the new marrow cells’ survival. They risked lowering his defenses in the hopes that the new, mutated cells would reject the virus on their own.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases in the U.S., said the procedure was too costly and too dangerous to employ as a firstline cure. But he said it could inspire researchers to pursue gene therapy as a means to block or suppress HIV.

“It helps prove the concept that if somehow you can block the expression of CCR5, maybe by gene therapy, you might be able to inhibit the ability of the virus to replicate,” Fauci said.

David Roth, a professor of epidemiology and international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said gene therapy as cheap and effective as current drug treatments is in very early stages of development.

“That’s a long way down the line because there may be other negative things that go with that mutation that we don’t know about.”

Even for the patient in Berlin, the lack of a clear understanding of exactly why his AIDS has disappeared means his future is far from certain.

“The virus is wily,” Huetter said. “There could always be a resurgence.”
